Matthew 22
36.Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?".
Many Christians have use that question as a way to discount the ten commandments , to say that the "Royal Law" of God was nailed to the cross. In this article we will go over what this verse means and why we should not allow ourselves to be deceived any longer by false teachers.
37.Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.
What does it mean to love God with all your heart. Is loving God a weak sentimental feeling left to us to decide or does the Bible describe what it is to love Him. Fortunately for us it does and it is right in the ten commandments. The commandments has two parts, the first four dealing with Loving God and the second with loving your neighbor.
So what does it means to love God? Well if you love God
you will:
1.You shall have no other gods before me
2. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything ...or worship them
3.You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God
4.Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy
Exodus 20:3-11. The first four commandments tell you how to love God.
39.And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.
Again the same question is asked how do you know if you love your neighbor? . The second half of the Decalogue deals with that.
For if you truly love your neighbor , you will:
5.Honor your father and your mother
6.You shall not commit adultery
7.You shall not steal
8.You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor
9.You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, his wife, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Exodus 20:12-17.
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:36-40
So as we can see Jesus simply summarized the commandments and not do away with. People who say that the commandments are done away with are simply not telling the truth. They only say that in relation to the fourth commandment that speaks about the sanctity of the Sabbath. People that teaches such thing are simply in rebellion. For the same person who says the "Royal Law" was abolish at the cross will not accept you to take his wife from him.
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17
Beloved the ten commandments were written by the finger of God for a reason, the only thing in the Bible that he wrote. It is called the Royal Law, the Law of Liberty. Do not be deceived by the false shepherds who are telling you it is legalism to keep the commandments, because it is not legalism to not commit adultery. On our own we cannot keep the law, but with God's power we will love Him and our fellow man as ourselves.
If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15
If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. 1 John 2:4
If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. James 2:8
